    The Powertrain Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the Powertrain team in 3D CAD design and 2D drawing creation in Catia V5. This individual will also lead the tasking of other contract Designers to meet program design milestones. The Powertrain Design Engineer will report to the Supervisor, Powertrain Mechanical. The Powertrain Design Engineer may support special project needs within the larger Powertrain group to meet company objectives as required.



    Primarily, this individual is responsible for managing the Powertrain DMU (Digital Mock Up) 3D-CAD model in Karma’s PLM software SmarTeam. The Design Engineer will also support the Powertrain Design Release Engineers as needed with design updates and CAD support.


    Design responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    • Packaging studies
    • Updating assemblies
    • Detailed component design
    • CAD data exchange with suppliers
    • 2D drawing creation with GD&T
    • Running CAD models to support Design Review Meetings
    • Interfacing with other vehicle modules to resolve design issues
    • Send design data to suppliers to support prototype fabrication.


    Perform the CAD Design tasks for the Powetrain group in Catia V5 and manage data within Karma’s PLM software SmarTeam.

    • Support the Powertrain team in the following activities:
    • RDM to motor integration
    • RDM mount design 
    • Assembly sequence of Powertrain Subsystems 
    • Genset mount design
    • Fuel tank design
    • Fuel line routing
    • Air inlet routing 
    • Exhaust muffler design 
    • Engine bay packaging of control modules
    • Bracket design for components


    Should be familiar with:

    • Electric and Hybrid Powertrain subsystems
    • Principles of operation of the following:
    • Internal combustion engines
    • Transmissions and drivelines
    • High Voltage Power Electronic Subsystems
    • Battery Packs

    Required Qualifications:

    • 5 years experience designing in Catia V5
    • 2 years experience designing automotive powertrain components
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills
    • Interest in hybrid powertrain systems
    • Ability to create GD&T for 2D drawings per latest industry standards
    • Experience using a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software such as SmarTeam
    • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.

    Preferred Qualifications (In addition to required)

    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
    • Expert in using Catia V5
    • Proficient in SmarTeam
    • 5 years experience designing Powertrain Systems and Components for on-road automotive applications
    • Prior background knowledge of electric and hybrid powertrain systems
    • Passionate about the Karma vehicles
