    The Emission Test Engineer will be responsible for understanding and interpreting the regulations in order to execute emission compliance testing for the vehicle.  This position requires the ability to stay up-to-date on latest regulations for all relevant areas in which the vehicle is being sold.  The successful engineer will be adept in quick troubleshooting of electromechanical systems and hybrid electric vehicles.  He or she will work with the OBD and ECM teams in order to prepare vehicles and hardware, and to define and execute necessary testing. 


    • Scheduling and execution of tailpipe emission tests, evaporative emission tests, fuel economy tests, OBD monitoring demonstration tests, and any other testing relevant to emission certification of the vehicle with EPA, CARB, EU, and China.
    • Execution of detailed test procedures according to federal regulatory requirements, industry standards, and Karma requirements.
    • Preparation, instrumentation,and troubleshooting of the vehicle, relevant unit-under-test, and test cell for development and certification testing.
    • Familiarity with U.S., E.U., and China regulations as relates to emission compliance.
    • Ability to read and interpret regulations and standards to aid in development of requirements, test plans, and procedures in cooperation with the ECM and OBD teams.
    • Interpretation of regulations in order to propose and execute plans for vehicle configuration and break-in (EDV, DDV, FEDV, etc.) in cooperation with the ECM and OBD teams.



    • BS. in Engineering (preferably Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or Control Systems).
    • Familiarity with relevant world market emission regulations (US, EU, China).
    • Hands-on work experience with good problem solving skills.
    • Ability to collaborate and work cross-functionally with calibration and development engineers, ECM team, HCU team, OBD team, Powertrain Systems team, Software Quality team, and Vehicle Integration team).
    • Working knowledge of common vehicle communication protocols (e.g., CAN).
    • Detail-oriented with good organizational skills.
    • Interest in working in an automotive start-up.
    • Ability and desire to travel locally (within 100 mi radius of the office) up to 75% of the time.

    Desired Qualification 

    • Experience scheduling and executing emission tests
    • Experiencing running PVE (j)(1), (j)(2), and (j)(3) testing
    • Experience working with ETAS hardware and software including INCA
    • Experience with CANalyzer and Vector Suite software/hardware
    • Experience with DiagRA
    • Experience working in automotive engineering start-up environment
    • Working knowledge of PHEV / EV powertrain architecture
    • Working knowledge of CARB OBD II regulations (Title 13 CCR §1968.2)
    • Familiarity with applicable industry standards (J1979, J1699, J1978, J2012)
    • Familiarity with diagnostic protocols (J1979, UDS)
    • Knowledge of ODX / CANdela / diagnostic descriptor files
    • Experience performing in-vehicle testing utilizing break-out-boxes or other fault insertion methods
