    The Chief Technology Officer is responsible for defining the next generation of automotive technologies for the Company.  The CTO leads the Automotive Engineering group consisting of Platform, hereunder, Chassis, Body and Interior. Powertrain, hereunder Battery Development, and Powertrain hardware & Software. Vehicle Integration and Testing, hereunder Vehicle Software Validation & Release, and Virtual Engineering.

    The primary focus is on near term programs while concurrently looking at the longer term. The incumbent drives innovation and ensures that leading-edge technologies will be incorporated into Karma Automotive products to achieve optimal profitability and enable Karma Automotive to be a technology leader.

    Working collaboratively with the leaders of the Engineering, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Vehicle Line and Marketing organizations, the incumbent with his/her team envisions, seeks and evaluates next generation technologies in such functional areas as infotainment, connectivity, EV and PHEV powertrain, body and platform, materials, autonomous vehicle, energy storage, wireless charging, and other key areas and then implements plans to incorporate these advancements into both near-term and longer term, next generation platforms. This position is also responsible for technology advancement through investigation of investment opportunities in early stage companies whose technologies are synergistic with Karma’s current and future business requirements.

    The CTO will also be responsible for leading vehicle level system and component homologation and certification activities for all designated markets. Lead achievement of best-in-class vehicle performance, durability and reliability through developing the voice of the customer, benchmarking competitive vehicle, vehicle technical specifications, validation and regulatory requirements that are aligned with strategic vision of the vehicle.  Lead vehicle integration processes that ensure timely vehicle development tradeoff decisions that properly balance engineering design feasibility with functional and technical specifications, through design & validation phases, vehicle builds and production resulting.

     

    The Chief Technology Officer may serve as the Company’s representative to industry and academic associations, professional groups, and technical societies.

    Responsibilities

    • Lead the Automotive Engineering Group
    • In collaboration with the VLE organization, execute on current vehicle programs
    • Lead the business planning process and support external reporting as required
    • Develop the Karma Automotive technology roadmap; manage Intellectual Property and innovation
    • Develop business and technology relationships complementary to Karma Automotive interests
    • Identify and evaluate next generation technologies for suitability for incorporation into Karma Automotive vehicles
    • Seek automotive opportunities that may hold potential for Wanxiang America investment
    • Lead the definition of current and future vehicle programs and content prior to program planning approval and handoff to the Vehicle Line Executive, including optimization of marketing needs, financial goals and engineering feasibility
    • Provide accurate product program inputs into the Karma Automotive business planning process
    • Staff, manage and develop a highly-skilled Automotive Engineering organization
    • Collaborate with the Chief Revenue Officer to manage voice-of-the customer research for the effective translation of customer needs into descriptive and objective vehicle attributes
    • Generate product volume forecasts balancing sales, marketing, manufacturing operations, supply chain and any other stakeholders of interest
    • Manage the ongoing product planning process as new vehicle content is being evaluated for potential inclusion into existing production programs
    • Direct the implementation of systems and components designs for global compliance with applicable vehicle manufacturing/safety standards including, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS), European Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA), GCC Standardization Organization, and China Compulsory Certification (CCC). 
    • Lead the preparation of self-certification and type-approval test plans to ensure automotive systems and components are engineered in conformance with the specifications.
    • Develop robust vehicle & sub-system technical specifications that encompass dynamic, static, NVH, perceived quality performance and requirements for Karma vehicles; establish processes to guide vehicle engineering execution to these specifications.
    • Manage the attributes for Vehicle Integration to achieve highest perceived quality

    Qualifications

    • Minimum 15+ years in a senior engineering development with demonstrated results incorporating technology advancement in design and delivery of automobiles or other transportation vehicles
    • Minimum of 10 years of experience in automotive Active and Passive Restraint hardware specification, selection, packaging, development, launch and issues resolution with at least two automotive product lines.
    • Experience with vehicle launch.
    • Exceptional depth of technical expertise along with strategic thinking and planning capabilities
    • Demonstrated skills in taking next generation technologies and addressing their use and practical application in the design, development and incorporation in vehicles (i.e. driving revenue growth through innovation)
    • Strong leadership skills demonstrated through the management of large global engineering and related teams
    • Experience with venture capital, M&A of technical entities, joint ventures and intellectual property generation and monetization is a plus
    • Excellent communication skills with an ability to clearly articulate and share his/her vision, ideas and plans with colleagues and to be able to deal constructively with opposing ideas or opinions
    • Flexibility and adaptability to deal with changing priorities or the rapid turnaround required in a dynamic environment
    • Global experience, especially Asia-Pacific and China, highly desirable
    • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable
