    The Paint Engineer, Body Exteriors is the primary technical resource for automotive exterior paint materials and paint shop processes. Assist and support various engineering groups within the company, paint supplier(s), manufacturing plant paint shop and part suppliers as necessary. Also responsible for ensuring new colors meet engineering and color mastering requirements within defined timelines


    • Develop performance specifications for automotive exterior paints, sealers and NVH foams
    • Assist with developing corporate and plant process controls for color, appearance, and film
    • Support the team in establishing acceptable boundary standards for subjective areas such as variations to standards for color and surface appearance
    • Support paint shop manufacturing processes and activities
    • Manage open issues and ensure timely resolution
    • Manage parts from initial design, to prototype phase, and production
    • Create and manage EBOM (Engineering Bill of Materials), including material selection and finish
    • Coordinate release of engineering changes, and appropriate documentation
    • Provide weekly updates of progress, goals and road blocks
    • Able to work within a cross-functional team to achieve goals
    • Verify styling theme feasibility (manufacturing, service, safety, regulatory etc.)
    • Understand and update Engineering documentation such as TES’s (Tech. Spec’s), DFMEA’s (Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and DVP’s (Design Verification Plan)
    • Able to coordinate and complete mock-up of parts for evaluation
    • Able to work closely with suppliers to achieve goals
    • Track open issues via issue tracking process, drive communication to closure of issues - Plan for parts timing alignment with overall program timing plan
    • Coordinate testing and validation activities and provide reports
    • Consult with colleagues and supervisor as required
    • Report and escalate major issues immediately to Supervisor
    • Develop targets for investment (engineering and tooling) and piece cost as it relates to paint
    • Conduct vehicle benchmark studies / technical research of competitive products, present findings and suggest recommendations


    • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or similar required –
    • 5 Plus Years of paint engineering experience –
    • Knowledge of Paint Application Systems, paint line operations, manufacturing engineering and quality –
    • A good eye for color and an ability to read color visually will be a necessity –
    • Previous automotive OEM or major Tier 1 experience is a major plus –
    • Previous assembly plant launch experience preferred –
    • Knowledge of metals, plastics, composites as it relates to paint operations - Good analytical skills –
    • Excellent communication skills and a team player approach is required –
    • CATIA V5 experience preferred - SmarTeam experience preferred –
    • Experience or knowledge of root cause analysis or Design of Experiments –
    • Experience with Design Verification Plan & Report (DVP&R) –
    • Experience with Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) –
    • Willingness to travel to supplier, and assembly plant during launch –
    • Must be proficient with Microsoft products such as Word, Excel and others –
    • Ability to work overtime and occasional travel will be required.
    • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable.
