The Technical Specialist, Electric Machines Development is responsible for requirements, design, release and testing for all electric machines including the electric traction motor, generator, high voltage connector, mounting, thermal and motor controls as a validated subsystem meeting all functional targets for serial production. 

Responsibilities

The position includes, but is not limited to:

  • Direct all activity for Electric Machine development supporting component design requirements, critical program deliverables, alignment to overall vehicle development schedule, and budget planning and scheduling.
  • Lead the design, analysis, development, and validation of all Electric Machine components, and effectively supports subsystem and vehicle-level integration to ensure high-quality performance.
  • Responsible for motor design innovation activities such as lower the cost, improvement of efficiency, and loss breakdown analysis and modeling
  • Effectively manage all design changes affecting the Electric Machine components, especially related to larger sub-system requirements (hardware and software).
  • Serve as company-wide subject-matter expert (SME) for Electric Machine design and development.
  • Support development of program-specific component specifications that ensure compliance to all VTS and Powertrain SSTS requirements (incl. performance, EMC, high voltage safety, thermal, reliability, and durability requirements).
  • Meet timing and cost objectives (piece and investment) for all electric machine components.
  • Develop and synchronize the phased calibration and development plan for the subsystem with program milestones and in conjunction with the vehicle level software release schedule.
  • Support all manufacturing launch activity including Aftersales (diagnostics documentation, service bulletins, etc.).
  • Work in conjunction with purchasing and supplier development to ensure that only qualified suppliers are selected for current and future programs.
  • Organize and lead customer/supplier meetings
  • Develop team capability to support future cost-effective electric powertrain development for global EV market.

Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering with specialty in Electric Machines or Electromagnetics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in leadership, team development, budget planning and project timing control.
  • Excellent technical oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to identify problems, recommend solutions, and negotiate and execute contingency plans.
  • Demonstrated understanding of vehicle development & system integration process.
  • Knowledge of electric machine applications in Electric Vehicles or Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV).
  • Hands on experience in electric powertrain systems validation and diagnostics.
  • Familiar with industry standards for electric motor design and manufacturing, especially automotive.
  • Knowledge of calibration and data acquisition tools, e.g. Vector CANalyzer.
  • Knowledge of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of electric machines and vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of component design standards such as NEMA.
  • General understanding of automotive industry standards such as SAE, ISO, etc.
  • Demonstrated project/program-management experience within automotive Tier-1 or Tier-2 supply base.
  • Strong problem solving
  • Sense of urgency and strong attention to detail.

 

Preferred Qualifications: (In addition to required):

 

  • PhD in Physics/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering with specialty in Electric Machines or Electromagnetics.
  • Multiple peer-reviewed technical publications - Electric Machines or Electromagnetics.
  • Demonstrated progressive responsibility and hands on experience with automotive OEM high voltage electrical systems used in electric or hybrid electric vehicles.
  • Experience with Hybrid vehicle/powertrain systems.
  • Experience managing early-stage or growth-mode teams, especially in Electric Machines.
  • Experience with automotive OEM or Tier-1 supplier for production-intent development programs.
  • Knowledge of automotive power electronics - Inverter, DC-DC Converters, etc.
  • Knowledge of automotive energy storage subsystems (HV Battery) and its controls.
  • Demonstrated understanding of ISO26262 – Functional Safety.
  • Practical experience with Diagnostics verification and compliance.
  • Significant experience in Electric or PHEV development & system integra
  • Basic knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001:2015) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001:2015), as applicable
